Preveli
The monastery of Preveli is located in one of the most beautiful places in Crete. Although the exact date it was erected is unknown, there are indications of the presence of a small monastery in the area since the 10th century AD. The Preveli monastery is actually two monasteries: the Kato Monastery, that is now abandoned, and the Piso Monastery of Theologos. This one is inhabited by monks and can be visited. In the monastery premises there is a museum that exhibits a collection of icons, ritual objects and relics.
Arkadi
Arkadi Monastery is built among olive trees, pines, vineyards and cypresses, 500 meters above the sea level. It is the most historic monastery in Crete, directly connected to the Cretan people’s fight for freedom. During the Cretan Revolution of 1866 the monastery was besieged by a large Ottoman force and after a fierce fight and facing capture, the remaining defendants blew themselves up by igniting the gun powder house. UNESCO has declared Arkadi, a European Monument of Freedom.
Agia Eirini
This monastery is one of the oldest Cretan monasteries, built in 1362. For many years it was in a very bad shape but since the restoration that took place during the 90s is has become one of the most beautiful monasteries on the island. It is inhabited by nuns and beyond the religious role, the monastery is a place where the textile and embroidery local tradition is kept alive. The monastery hosts an exhibition of handiwork produced by the nuns.
